You make Hayabusa jump by tapping the screen twice, and can then point to enemies to shoot shurikens at them and perform a downward thrust attack. Even your ninja arts make use of the stylus, requiring that you draw shapes in order to perform the special attacks. Buttons are used only for defensive moves.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Published by: Nintendo

Developed by: Nintendo

Genre: Action Adventure
Number of Players: 1
Release Date: October 1, 2007

Not the first-ever dual-screen Zelda game (that honor goes to the foldable Game & Watch Zelda system), nor the first action adventure in the series to use two screens (Four Swords used the Game Boy Advance to GameCube link cable to pull this trick), The Legend of Zelda DS is the franchise's first outing on the Nintendo DS handheld.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is designed in the style of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The game features similar cel-shaded stylings for its 3D engine, with traditional top-down gameplay (using a hovering and semi-mobile camera in a locked perspective) and a map along the bottom screen.

Multiple control schemes take full advantage of the touch screen, giving all gamers an ideal way to play. The top screen displays the main game action in 3D, while the bottom screen doubles as a map and as a control "mouse pad" for the stylus.

Sonic Rush

Published by: SEGA

Developed by: Dimps / Sonic Team

Genre: Action

Number of Players: 1

The Sonic the Hedgehog experience has always been a platform design that more focused on running blazingly fast through the environments. Sonic Rush adds a "boost" element where players can now counterattack enemies waiting in off-screen blindspots. This boosting element is limited, and players will have to build up the power in order to use it, but when it's in stock it becomes incredibly handy and almost necessary to utilize. The new design also introduces a very "extreme games" style move system where players can pull off special moves to score additional points and to boost power. These moves can be pulled off with button and D-pad combinations while leaping in the air as well as grinding on some rails. And, of course, there's the dual screen aspect. The development team use the two screens as one display to give more of a viewable area.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis

Published by: Nintendo

Developed by: Nintendo

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 allows players to create their own maps with a new level editor. Once a map is created, players can send it across the world via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Players also can use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to download maps created by others, check out a player-ranking system and access special bonuses.

WarioWare Touched!

DS has all of the frantic five-second microgame action of the previous games, but with a touching new twist: you can play every microgame with the Nintendo DS touch screen. Many games will even utilize the system's built-in microphone. Players have to slice fruit as they fly across the screen, trap a duck as it walks under a cage, pluck a large facial hair by its root, spin a toilet paper roll until it's bare, hit a row of cats as they leap out, and many more. The game uses the two DS screens to present a double-high version of the familiar "squigglevision" elevator used in the Game Boy Advance and GameCube versions of Wario Ware, and when the door opens, it reveals the mini-game on the lower screen.

Utilizing a new dual screen presentation, the action spans both screens of the Nintendo DS, giving players the opportunity to battle across expansive environments in which death can come from any direction. The use of both screens for the game’s core action also allows for massive boss battles as players try to seek and destroy the weak points of sky-high enemies. A first for the series, Contra 4 introduces a grappling hook accessory that lets players grab onto elements of the environment directly above them. Whether using it to avoid oncoming dangers or attack from a strategic vantage point, the grappling hook allows for new combat situations and dramatic set pieces that underscore the game’s adrenaline-soaked pedigree. The game also continues the multiplayer tradition of previous games in the series, by letting two players battle together against Black Viper’s army of vile alien forces and reclaim Earth for mankind.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Published by: Nintendo

Developed by: AlphaDream

Genre: RPG

Number of Players: 1

If one needs proof that the infamous adventures of Mario and Luigi never get old, they only need to look at the newest installment to the series, MARIO & LUIGI 2 by Alphadream for the Nintendo DS, in which the brothers find themselves traveling through time to rescue Princess Peach. As if this storyline isn’t fantastic enough by itself, Mario and Luigi run into younger versions of themselves and the princess. Players must then control both the adult and young versions of the characters, which can lead to some interesting, and often hilarious, experiences in this role-playing game. Also, by allowing the player to control two different characters on two different screens at one time, the game opens up new capabilities for players to solve the puzzles and battles in a way that hasn’t previously been possible. However, controlling MARIO & LUIGI 2 isn’t as difficult as the double controls make it seem. For those players who aren’t as experienced in participating in this type of role-playing game, the puzzles and other obstacles are clearly marked at the beginning of the game. These clues and directions gradually disappear as the player navigates the game so that it doesn’t become too tedious. While MARIO & LUIGI 2 probably isn’t the best choice for serious role playing gamers who might think it a little simple and childish, it’s perfect for those players who are looking for a game that is a fun and exciting blast into their gaming past.

Kirby: Canvas Curse

Published by: Nintendo

Developed by: HAL Laboratory

Genre: Action

Number of Players: 1

Following their popular YOSHI TOUCH AND GO title, Nintendo has released KIRBY: Canvas Curse for the Nintendo DS. Players won't need to touch the control pad or the buttons here: the game is entirely controlled by using the stylus and the touch screen. Players draw lines, bridges, and walls to maneuver Kirby or to protect him from enemies. Kirby spends a lot of time as a ball in the game while players draw bridges over pits, walls to change his direction, and barriers to protect him from enemy attacks. Different colored lines have different properties as well, so players will have to be quick in changing colors. When Kirby comes unrolled, he can use a dash attack or copy enemy special moves. The game is broken up in to several different worlds, each comprised of three levels. At the end of each world, players select one of three bosses to battle. Players have the choice of the same three bosses for each world, but the more a player fights a boss, the stronger that boss becomes. Once the main game is completed, there are several other quests. Rainbow Run lets players replay sections of previous levels with different mission goals and rewards players with medals that can be spent at the item shop or used to unlock secrets like sound tests. KIRBY: Canvas Curse makes full use of the touch screen abilities of the DS, and players who enjoy using the stylus controls will find the game a fresh challenge.
