Movie Reviews

Live Free or Die Hard

Worth it for: Seeing Bruce Willis back in the roll that made him a movie star.
Plot: An attack on the vulnerable United States computer infrastructure begins to shut down the entire nation. The mysterious figure behind the shattering scheme has figured out every digital angle - but he never figured an old-fashioned, "analog" fly-in-the-ointment: John McClane.

My Thoughts: I have always been a fan of Die Hard and Bruce Willis as John McClane so this movie was a dream come true for me. I have been waiting years for Bruce to get back to this roll and I had no problems with his age while watching it. I know the action is unbelievable but that is what makes it awesome, I love seeing Bruce get the shit beat out of him and yet be completely unaffected. And his humor is just impeccable, which is what makes the character so great. The only problem I had with the whole movie is that it was rated PG-13 which means he couldn’t finish his signature line. If you have seen and enjoyed the original Die Hards you know what to expect and this movie delivers.
It's Kinda like: It is a lot like the original Die Hards and it also reminded me of 16 Blocks only with more action.

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Worth it for: This is debatable, but I actually liked the new Oompa-Loompa songs better, I found the old ones annoying.
Plot: Charlie Bucket, a boy from an impoverished family under the shadow of a giant chocolate factory, wins a candy bar contest and is given a tour, along with four other children, of the amazing factory run by the eccentric Willy Wonka and his staff of Oompa-Loompas.

My Thoughts: I keep hearing people describe this movie as “pretty weird” and if you have seen the first one, you know it is “pretty weird” (Oompa-Loompas and shnosberries). I love this movie, but it is hard to say if I like it more than the original, for everything that I like better about this one, there is something I like less. The beginning of the movie is way better, but I don’t know if I liked the end. I’m glad some of the songs from the original weren’t in it, but at the same time I missed a couple of them. I liked the Oompa-Loompas better this time, there songs were longer this time and different each time, and I didn’t like the green hair, orange faces, and ugly clothes of the original Oompa-Loompas. This is a good movie that anyone can enjoy especially fans of the original, but if you loved the original keep in mind that this isn’t a straight up remake so there will be changes, this is just another way the original could have been made.
It's Kinda like: It is very similar to the original, but not exactly.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

Wedding Crashers

Worth it for: I have an obsession with Will Ferrell so his small roll made me happy, and I guess Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are cool, too.
Plot: Vaughn and Wilson star as a pair of divorce mediators who spend their weekends crashing weddings in a search for Ms. Right...for a night. But when one of them falls for the engaged daughter (Rachel McAdams) of an influential and eccentric politician (Christopher Walken) at the social event of the year, they get roped into spending a weekend at the family's palatial waterfront estate and quickly find themselves in over their heads.

My Thoughts: This movie is immensely entertaining. I laughed pretty much the whole time, then when my guy Will Ferrell showed up I laughed even more. I have loved Owen Wilson for a long time and I love Vince Vaughn more and more every time I see him, they have great chemistry in this movie, and you believe that they are actually best friends. This is a good movie for the 16-40 range. If you want to laugh and have a good time I suggest you see it.
It's Kinda like: It reminds me of Old School, sort of.

My Rating: 5 out of 5

Blade: Trinity

Worth it for: The action and fight and special effects are pretty sweet.
Plot: For years, Blade has fought against the vampires in the cover of night, with the world above unaware of the brutal ongoing war. But now, after falling into the crosshairs of the FBI, he is forced out into the daylight where he is driven to join forces with a clan of human vampire hunters he never knew existed - The Nightstalkers. Together with Abigail (Jessica Biel) and Hannibal (Ryan Reynolds), two deftly trained Nightstalkers, Blade follows a trail of blood to an ancient creature that is hunting him...the original vampire, Dracula.

My Thoughts: This Blade movie isn’t as good as the previous two, but I think it was a pretty good way to end the trilogy. You could say it’s different from its predecessors, but that is hard to say because they are all so different. In this one Blade interacts with the real world (humans) a lot more than in the other, and I don’t know if that always works. At one point he kills a human and the cops drive up and he just runs away and they don’t even chase him, and at another point he is surrounded by cops and a car comes and picks him up, and again the cops don’t chase him, they just shoot at the car as he drives away. But I can look past that because maybe they were scared of him he is a scary guy. I didn’t really like the beginning of the movie because it took to long to introduce Blade and it was boring, you don’t seem him until 7 minutes into the film. I like Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel, Ryan Reynolds talks a lot, sometimes it’s funny and sometimes it’s not, but it stays true to the character in the comics, and Jessica Biel is hot. If you are a fan of Blade you will probably enjoy this one, but some people may be a little disappointed,
It's Kinda like: The first two Blade flicks.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

Worth it for: Patrick is darn funny.
Plot: SpongeBob SquarePants is an optimistic, free-spirited sponge that was born in a rectangular shape, much like a kitchen sponge. Living at the bottom of the sea in a pineapple in the community of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab diner, where his friends include Squidward the squid and Patrick the starfish.

My Thoughts: SpongeBob SquarePants is probably the dumbest cartoon ever, but I love it. How can you not like SpongeBob, he is so cute. Patrick has to be the dumbest character ever created, but he is hilarious. The story is kind of like a road trip for SpongeBob and Patrick, when the go out in search of the king’s crown. I like the road trip aspect and it’s kind of neat watch SpongeBob and Patrick in the real world when they make it to land. And David Hasselhof is just plain crazy, “DOOOO!” All the voices are good, but I don’t think Scarlett Johansson fits in this movie, with all the other crazy voices. I don’t think the movie was as good as the TV show though, because it was different, a lot of the secondary characters weren’t in it very much. Sandy only had like two lines and Squidward wasn’t as big of a jerk as he normally is. This movie was created for fans of the show, if you don’t like the show there is no way you would like this movie.
It's Kinda like: It’s just like the TV shows just longer.

My Rating: 3 out of 5

The Incredibles

Worth it for: I love that type of animation; it looks gorgeous.
Plot: 'The Incredibles' follows the adventures of a family of former superheroes rediscovering the true source of their powers - in one another. Once one of the world's top masked crimefighters, Bob Parr (AKA Mr. Incredible) fought evil and saved lives on a daily basis. But fifteen years later, he and his wife Helen (a famous former superhero in her own right) have been forced to take on civilian identities and retreat to the suburbs. Today they live as mere mortals and lead all-too-ordinary lives with their children... who go out of their way to appear "normal." As a clock-punching insurance man, the only thing Bob fights these days is boredom and a bulging waistline. Itching for action, the sidelined superhero gets his chance when a mysterious communication summons him to a remote island for a topsecret assignment. Now, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance, the family must come together and once again find the fantastic in their family life.

My Thoughts: The Incredibles is less of a kids movie then the other Pixar movies, because there is more action and stuff, but it is still a family flick. The characters are great, Mr. Incredible is cool, Dash is funny, the baby (Jack Jack) is cute, and Samuel L Jackson’s character (Frozone) is just plan awesome. The story is actually pretty original, people actually don’t like the superheros saving the day all the time so they force them to stop, but Mr. Incredible can’t stop because he loves helping people. I am a fan of superheros and of all the Pixar movies so I really like this one.
It's Kinda like: It reminds me of Monsters Inc., Toy Story, and basically all Pixar movies and maybe a little bit of Jimmy Neutron.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

Sin City

Worth it for: I don’t know if it is supposed to be, but it is extremely funny
Plot: Sin City is a violent city where the police department is as corrupt as the streets are deadly. In this movie, we follow three stories, the central of which is Marv, a tough-as-nails and nearly impossible to kill street fighter who goes on a rampage of vengeance when a beautiful woman, Goldie, he sleeps with for only one night is killed while lying in bed with him.

My Thoughts: This movie is pretty strange, but I don’t mind and neither should you. At first it is kind of odd because the whole movie is black and white with sprinkles of other colors, but you kind of forget about that after awhile. The while movie looks a lot like a graphic novel, which make sense because it is based on a graphic novel. It is also weird because there are like three movies in one and they really don’t have much in common. I love Bruce Willis, so that part was cool and I also thought Mickey Rourke, and Clive Owen did really good in the other two parts. There are rumors that Clive Owen might be the next James Bond and after seeing this I am ok with that. The movie is very violent and there seems to be an excessive amount of naked breasts and bottoms, but I didn’t mind. It is also peculiar that people seemed to get the life beat out of them, but they would never die. This is a bizarre movie, but I liked it, and it made me laugh quite a bit. I don’t think everyone will like it, but I sure as heck did so I would suggest you see it if you haven’t yet, I wouldn’t mind seeing it again. It is probably not something the ladies will like, but that’s just me talking.
It's Kinda like: I don’t know any other movies like that, and that’s what makes it so cool.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

Saw

Worth it for: It is very unpredictable and I like that in a movie.
Plot: A young man named Adam (LEIGH WHANNELL) wakes to find himself chained to a rusty pipe inside a decrepit subterranean chamber. Chained to the opposite side of the room is another bewildered captive, Dr. Lawrence Gordon (CARY ELWES). Between them is a dead man lying in a pool of blood, holding a .38 in his hand. Neither man knows why he has been abducted; but instructions left on a microcassette order Dr. Gordon to kill Adam within eight hours. If he fails to do so, then both men will die, and Dr. Gordon's wife, Alison (MONICA POTTER), and his daughter will be killed. Recalling a recent murder investigation by a police detective named Tapp (DANNY GLOVER), Dr. Gordon realizes he and Adam are the next victims of a psychopathic genius known only as "Jigsaw." With only a few hours left to spare, they must unravel the elaborate puzzle of their fate in the midst of mounting terror. The killer has provided them with only a few clues and two handsaws - too weak to break their steel shackles, but strong enough to cut through flesh and bone.

My Thoughts: Saw is the craziest movie ever? Probably, but I enjoyed it. Even the plot sounds crazy as hell. I wasn’t sure if I would like this movie because it looked scary, but its not so much scary as it is suspenseful. It makes you think, “What would I do in a situation like that?” The movie has a great story and I thought the acting was ok, but I’m not a good judge of acting, if you asked me I would say Keanu Reeves was a good actor, I usually look past the acting and if I am enjoying the movie it doesn’t matter. You probably only need to see this movie once, maybe twice, but I don’t know if it will be as enjoyable if you know what is going to happen. The sources tell me that there is a sequel in the works and I would like to see it.
It's Kinda like: It slightly reminds me of Se7en.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

Without a Paddle

Worth it for: Seth Green, Dax Shepard and Matthew Lillard are all very funny.
Plot: Three young guys go into the Oregon wilderness in search of lost treasure. They take a canoe upriver and everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Hunted by two backwoods farmers, they encounter death-defying rapids, tree-hugging hippie chicks and a crazy old mountain man played by Burt Reynolds.

My Thoughts: I am a fan of Seth Green because he is hilarious, and Dax Shepard always made me laugh when he was on Punk’d, and Matthew Lillard can be funny at times, I liked him in 13 Ghosts even though that movie was pretty dumb. I think they all acted really well together in this film, like they are all actually best friends. This is an awesome comedy that will make you laugh and it is just a good movie to sit down and enjoy. It’s not likely that any of the situations in the movie would really happen and if it was real they probably would have died a number of times, but it is still a pleasure to watch. If you are a fan of any of the lead actors or treasure hunts then you will enjoy the hell out of this film. If you are looking for something deep and meaningful then well I just feel sorry for you.
It's kinda like: It’s like a grown up version of The Goonies and it also kind of reminded me of City Slickers.

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Paparazzi

Worth it for: Seeing them paparazzi get what they deserve.
Plot: When an overzealous group of four paparazzi photographers cause a car accident that injures his wife (Tunney) and son, a hot young (and very angry) movie star named Bo Laramie (Hauser) concocts a revenge plot against them.

My Thoughts: This movie rather good. There are some great cameos by Vince Vaughn, Chris Rock, and Mel Gibson. I couldn’t figure out why Vaughn and Rock were in this movie, but it made me laugh. I have hated Paparazzi ever since I saw a show called Celebrities Uncovered. There would be celebrities trying to eat dinner or something thing and all of a sudden all these people would come up and start taking pictures and stuff. Just let them eat their dinner, who cares if they like chicken and green beans? The police won’t do anything so this man has to get revenge his own way and it’s pretty clever how he pulls it off. It was nice to see someone take the law into their own hands; I like those type of movies. If you are a fan of movies you should check this one out.
It's kinda like: Other movies where someone is seeking revenge.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

Shark Tale

Worth it for: The Shrimp, Crazy Joe and The Jellyfish.
Plot: Oscar (Will Smith) is a fast-talking little fish who dreams big. But his big dreams land him in hot water when a great white lie turns him into an unlikely hero. At first, his fellow fish swallow Oscar's story hook, line and sinker and he is showered with fame and fortune. It's all going along swimmingly, until it starts to become clear that Oscar's tale about being the defender of the Reef is all wet. Oscar is finding out that being a hero comes at a Market Price when his lie threatens to make him the Catch of the Day. Now he has to tread water until he can get the scales to tip back in his favor again.

My Thoughts: There are many great voices including Will Smith, Jack Black and Robert De Niro, and the animation is very well done. It’s not the best CGI movie out there, but the story is still good. The good thing about this movie is that you can watch it with the whole family and everyone can enjoy it, well everyone except that one dick in every family that doesn’t like any movie. Don’t get me wrong this is not Finding Nemo, besides the animation and the fish it is nothing like Finding Nemo. This movie takes more of an urban look at sea life and a mobster look as well. So if you know any mobsters or black people they might enjoy this movie. If you’re a fan of CGI movies, like me, you will probably like this one too, or if you just a fan of fish. I also found Jack Black to be delightful.
It's Kinda like: It’s s
imilar to Finding Nemo, but only with the animation.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

The Punisher

Worth it for: The action is great along with everything else in this film.
Plot: Frank Castle (Thomas Jane) is a man who has seen too much death in his life, first as a Delta Force Op and later as an FBI special agent. He has managed to beat considerable odds, and is finally moving out of the field and into a normal life with his wife and son. On his final assignment, Castle plays his undercover role perfectly, but the operation spins out of control. This places the FBI on the wrong side of Tampa businessman Howard Saint (John Travolta) and his glamorous wife Livia (Laura Harring). Notwithstanding their glossy social profile, the Saints are no genteel Florida couple; behind their copious wealth are violent beginnings, underworld ties – and a chilling capacity for brutality. Castle’s worst nightmare is about to come true, as Howard Saint and his lieutenants unleash hell at the Castle family reunion. But Castle, to his everlasting torment, survives. Drawing upon all he has learned in 20 years, Castle sets in motion a brilliant plan to punish the murderers. He takes up residence among in a dilapidated tenement building on Tampa’s industrial waterfront, where his fellow tenants include Joan (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos), a waitress at a nearby diner who is trying to put her life back on track. Castle’s neighbors become his last link to the idea of human community and warmth. It is this makeshift family – forgotten men and women with no one to protect them - who enable Castle to find the one thing he least expects: redemption.

My Thoughts: I am usually a pretty big fan of comic book movies and action movies and I like Tom Jane so I thought I might like this movie. I wanted to see The Punisher for a while and it was in fact extremely awesome. The action in this movie is done really well and I enjoyed every minute of it. I loved watching Frank Castle seek his revenge… wait not revenge… punishment; it is very clever. If you’re a fan of other comic book movies definitely check this one out. I don’t know why the box office income wasn’t higher, but the DVD sales have been pretty good so I really really really hope that is enough to get them to decide to make a sequel, really.
It's Kinda like: Other movies based on comic books or movies were the main character seeks revenge.

My Rating: 5 out of 5

Alien vs Predator

Worth it for: The fight scenes between the alien and the predator
Plot: The iconic monsters from the two franchises battle each other on Earth for the first time on film, as they have in the comic-book world. The discovery of an ancient pyramid buried in Antarctica sends a team of scientists and adventurers to the frozen continent. There, they make an even more terrifying discovery: two alien races engaged in an ultimate battle.

My Thoughts: This movie isn’t that bad. It is really cool watching the alien and the predator throw down in fist to cuffs. The beginning of this movie is pretty boring, but about half way into it the action picks up and the alien and predator finally get together. People were telling me this movie wasn’t very good, but I thought it was actually pretty good and I don’t know if that’s because I was expecting it to be bad. It would have been nice to see the Alien or Predator movies more recently so I could remember them, but you do not need them to enjoy this movie. This movie is fun to watch the first time, but I don’t know how exciting it would be to watch again and again so just check it out once.
It's kinda like: The old Alien movies mixed in with the old Predator movies.

My Rating: 3 out of 5

Troy

Worth it for: The battle scenes are very well done.
Plot: In 1193 B.C., Prince Paris (Bloom) of Troy stole the beautiful Greek woman, Helen (Kruger), away from her husband, Menelaus, the king of Sparta, setting the two nations at war with each other, as the Greeks began a bloody siege of Troy using their entire armada, led by Achilles (Pitt), that lasted over a decade.

My Thoughts: This movie is pretty good, but it’s kind of sad that you know how it will end if you know anything about Troy. Brad Pitt is pretty awesome in this movie as well as Eric Bana, watching them two do battle is probably the best part of the film. It’s hard to know who to route for because on the one side the kings is an idiot and his son is too, but his other son Eric Bana is cool and on the other side the leader is a dick and you want him to die from the first time you see him, but Brad Pitt is cool. This movie is great the first time, but I don’t know how good it will be the second time around. If you a fan of movies about war or ancient Greece or Brad Pitt you should give this movie a look.
It's Kinda like: It reminds me of Braveheart and Gladiator, but not quite as good.

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Friday Night Lights

Worth it for: The hard hitting tackles and great football action.
Plot: Based on the book about high school football by H.G. Bissinger, Friday Night Lights chronicles the entire 1988 season of the Permian High Panthers of Odessa, Texas, with football players, coaches, mothers, fathers, boosters, fans and families struggling with ongoing personal conflicts while the team fights for a state championship. In depicting the daily grind of coach Gary Gaines' (Billy Bob Thornton) winning team and the potential destinies of its individual players, the story paints a vivid portrait of Odessa (and places like it all across America) where, once a week during the fall, the town and its dreams come alive beneath the dazzling and disorienting Friday night lights...when the Panthers take to the field. Friday Night Lights illuminates the hopes and dreams of Odessa's townsfolk, who ardently fill Ratliff Stadium's 20,000 seats every Friday night. For the young men of the team, every moment, every play is a chance to transcend their small town and the fleeting fulfillment of a gridiron stardom whose pinnacle may be reached by the time they turn 18.

My Thoughts: The football played in this movie is fantastic, but the story kind of falls flat. It’s basically a small town football team trying to win a State Championship and nothing seems to be going their way. It’s been done before. I love the football seems, some of them are really great. Outside of the football the story is good, and it’s amazing that it’s based on a true story, but I don’t think the movie is as great as people have been saying. If you’re a fan of football you should check this movie out once and that is probably enough.
It's Kinda like: Remember the Titans and Any Giving Sunday and other football movies.

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5

i, Robot

Worth it for: Shia LaBeouf; not many people know who he is, but he has a small role in this movie and I love him.
Plot: Will Smith stars in this action thriller inspired by the classic short story collection by Isaac Asimov and brought to the big screen by director Alex Proyas (Dark City, The Crow). In the year 2035, robots are an everyday household item and everyone trusts them, except one slightly paranoid detective (Smith) investigating what he alone believes is a crime perpetrated by a robot. The case leads him to discover a far more frightening threat to the human race.

My Thoughts: I think this movie was great. I love Will Smith as an actor and I think he is great in everything he does. The movie takes place about 30 years in the future and I don’t think the technology will be that advanced in that length of time, but once you look past that and see it’s just a movie than you can enjoy it. Shia LaBeouf, from the Disney show Even Stevens and in the movie Holes, is my favorite young actor and his small role in this movie is sweet. The fight scenes and action sequences are very, very well done. The robots and other graphics looked good. If you are a fan of Will Smith or movies about robots and stuff than I’m willing to bet you would enjoy this movie.
It's Kinda like: It reminds me of Minority Report or something that would take place before the events in The Matrix.

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Spider-Man 2

Worth it for: The theme song, plus it is a great movie.
Plot:
Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man returns in the sequel to the record-breaking blockbuster movie debut for Marvel Comics' flagship character. Tobey Maguire returns as Peter Parker, the nerd-turned-hero, to face new threats to New York City and the people he loves.

My Thoughts: Spider-Man 2 is a good movie for everyone. I actually think I liked this one more than the first one. This movie pits Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock and I always like Doc Ock more than the Green Goblin. The story in both movies is really great, but I’ve seen the first one a few times. If you’re a fan of the first movie I guarantee that you will enjoy they second. See if you can spot Stan Lee, he makes a tiny cameo in every Marvel movie, don’t blink or you might miss; it especially if you don’t know what Stan Lee looks like. After seeing the first movie I wasn’t really excited about the second, but after seeing it, I am excited about the third and possibly a fourth. I don’t want to give anything away so I will just leave it at that.
It's Kinda like: The first Spider-Man movie and it reminds me of Superman, too.

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5

The Bourne Supremacy

Worth it for: Continuing the story that was so great in The Bourne Identity.
Plot: 'The Bourne Supremacy' re-enters the shadowy world of expert assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), who continues to find himself plagued by splintered nightmares from his former life. The stakes are now even higher for the agent as he coolly maneuvers through the dangerous waters of international espionage - replete with CIA plots, turncoat agents and ever-shifting covert alliances - all the while hoping to find the truth behind his haunted memories and answers to his own fragmented past.

My Thoughts: I wasn’t a big fan of Matt Damon until I saw The Bourne Identity and now I like him a lot. The Bourne Identity was a great movie and this one is no different. The action and everything is awesome, but at some points the camera gets a little shaky and that can get a little annoying. Other than the camera I didn’t find anything bad about this movie. If I had to choose I would say The Bourne Identity is better because I like the story better, but The Bourne Supremacy probably has more action and things of that nature. If you a fan of the first Bourne movie you will enjoy this movie as well, and if you like me you can’t wait for The Bourne Ultimatum to come out.
It's Kinda like: Of course the first movie The Bourne Identity and other thriller-actiony type movies.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Worth it for: I always enjoy the beginning of the movies when Harry is at home with his adopted parents and something goes wrong.
Plot:
Starting during the summer before Harry's third year at Hogwarts, this is the adventure that happens when he has to go on the run after an incident where he was unable to control his anger... getting on a bus, he hears about Sirius Black, a renegade wizard who was a Prisoner at Azkaban. What Harry doesn't suspect is that Black escaped to look for... him.

My Thoughts: I saw the first two Harry Potter movies, and they weren’t bad, but I was never a fan of Harry Potter. I would have to say this is a much better movie than the others. The other ones moved along kind of slow, while this moves at a good pace. This time round there's a definite storyline, and it's like a regular movie. It's less of a kiddy movie, and that’s good for me because I’m no kiddy. It's also not as long as the others, so the story moves along at a nice pace. It's never slow or boring for a second, there were slow times in the first two flicks. The only thing that I wasn't too keen on was how it seemed to go along nicely for a long time, then the end was very rushed. Suddenly everything ends far too quickly and I was left feeling I'd missed something. I'm now a bit of a fan, and I do want to see the 4th Harry Potter movie. If you like Harry Potter or even if you don’t (heck I didn’t) you should enjoy this film.
It's kinda like: The other Harry Potter flicks, but I liked this one more.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

Worth it for: It is always funny watching people get hit in the face and crotch with things.

Plot: A small local gym is threatened with extinction by a gleaming sports and fitness palace unless a group of social rejects can rise to victory in the ultimate dodgeball competition.

My Thoughts: This is a hilarious movie with many great characters such as Steve The Pirate and Gordan. Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller both do a great job in this movie, as well as many other people in the cast. There are also some great cameos you wouldn’t expect (Lance Armstrong, Chuck Norris). If you like comedies you will enjoy this movie. You may not want to watch this movie over and over so I would suggest renting it, but I would enjoy watching this movie more than once because it is damn funny. In a few years this movie will be looked on as a comedy classic much like Caddyshack is.
It's kinda like: It reminds me of the end of Old School when a group of misfits has to prove they belong at the school.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

The Whole Ten Yards

Worth it for: Matthew Perry is hilarious as Oz.

Plot: This movie follows the continuing wacky misadventures of a hitman, Jimmy the Tulip (Willis), who lives next door to a mild-mannered dentist, Oz (Perry). Following the events of 'The Whole Nine Yards,' Oz is now married to Jimmy's ex-wife, Cynthia (Henstridge), and Jimmy is married to Oz's former dental assistant (and hit woman), Jill St. Claire (Peet), and Jimmy has dropped the hitman persona to be more of a family man. Nick has to seek the hitman help of Jimmy and Jill, however, when Cynthia is kidnapped by the Hungarian mob (she was also held hostage in the first movie), which includes Lazlo (Pollak), the brother of Yanni from the first movie.

My Thoughts: What do you know, another sequel that isn’t nearly as good as the original. The Whole Nine Yards was so great I didn’t expect this one to be as good, but Matthew Perry pretty much saved the movie for me. Matthew Perry’s character Oz is just as nervous and twitchy as ever and it cracks me up. When I first saw The Whole Nine Yards I fell in love with Matthew Perry because he does such a great job with that character and this movie is no different. The plot of Ten wasn’t very good, but the characters are still great; especially Oz. If you are like me and are a big fan of Nine then I think you will like this one, too, but don’t expect it to be as good. If your not a fan of Matthew Perry or Bruce Willis, don’t bother.
It's kinda like: It is a lot like The Whole Nine Yards, but not as good.

My Rating: 3 out of 5

Collateral

Worth it for: Jaime Foxx is usually in comedies, but he does a great job in this movie.

Plot: Max (Foxx) is a failed comedy writer living in Los Angeles who makes a living as a cab driver. This movie focuses on one very tumultuous day for Max, as he figures out that the fare (Cruise) he's been driving around all day is a contract killer, committing a series of hits. Now, it's up to him to somehow stop the killer from executing the last witness... as well as himself.

My Thoughts: The movie starts of kind of slow and it’s another one of those action movies where the camera isn’t steady so it’s difficult to follow the action, but other than that the movie is good. It’s a little strange seeing Tom Cruise play a bad guy, but he does a good job, and I’m not a big fan of his. Cruise does well, but it’s Jaime Foxx who really does great in this film. It’s also strange because Foxx is more of a comedy type of guy, but he is perfect in this role. If you enjoy thrillers or action movies you should give this movie a shot.

It's kinda like: Other action movies.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

The Chronicles of Riddick
Worth it for: I love Vin Diesel, in a non-gay way, and watching him kick ass is awesome.
Plot: The further adventures of Riddick (Vin Diesel) continue five years later, as the escaped convict with the ability to see in the dark finds himself caught in the middle of a galactic war between two opposing forces, with the key figure being the Lord Marshal (Colm Feore), the leader of a sect called the Necromongers waging the "10th Crusade" in the 26th century. Helping Riddick is Aereon (Judi Dench), the Ambassador of the "Elemental" race, who helps Riddick unearth the secrets of his origin and Kyra (Alexa Davalos), who has grown up since Riddick knew her as a preteen girl in the first movie. Attempting to free himself and Kyra from a subterranean prison, Riddick ends up on board the Necromonger flagship, where he gets his chance to face off against the Lord Marshal in a battle over the future of all beings in the galaxy, both living... and dead.

My Thoughts: Vin Diesel is one of my favorite actors so of course I may be a little bias towards this movie, plus I loved Pitch Black; which this is a sequel of. The movie is probably a little confusing if you haven’t seen Pitch Black and even if you have some parts could still be a little confusing. Once you see the whole movie it should make sense, but there are a few references to Pitch Black that you won’t understand. If you like Vin Diesel or movies with a lot of action and fighting you should see this movie, but first you should watch Pitch Black because that is a good movie, too. Riddick was originally supposed to be a trilogy, but because this movie didn’t make as much money as they hoped, it may not happen. I really hope it does because this movie was great, in my opinion, but we will have to wait and see.
It's Kinda like: The movie kind of reminds me of a cross between Star Wars and The Matrix, Riddick would be the Jedi master and some of the fight scenes look like that of The Matrix.
My Rating: 5 out of 5

Team America: World Police
Worth it for: The whole movie is hilarious, but the music is extra funny.
Plot: This politcally-minded comedy action adventure tells the story of Team America, a group of superhero-style adventurers who travel the world fighting terrorism and other evils. Specifically, the story focuses on a typical "action hero" who is recruited to join Team America for a special mission, as a satire of the typical Hollywood action movie, using a combination of wood marionette-driven action sequences and stirring tongue-in-cheek musical numbers.
My Thoughts: This movie is all around funny from start to finish. It contains every action movie cliché that you can think of, and it also makes fun of a lot of people, especially all the actors that speak out politically. Kim Jong Il is funny in this movie just listening to him talk, and when he sings that is probably the funniest part. If you like South Park you should enjoy this movie because it’s the same tip of thing, but different. You can find some aspects of South Park in it, like the voices and one of the songs was used in the show. There are actually a lot of things blowing up on this movie, which is pretty humorous, plus the way the puppets walk and stuff looks awesome because it’s like they didn’t even try to make them walk normal. If you like laughing see this movie once or twice or more.
It's Kinda like: It reminds me of South Park because it’s from the same people, but I have never seen a movie like this before in my life.
My Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Hellboy
Worth it for: Seeing some demon get tossed all over the place and kill monsters.
Plot: When a Nazi mystical experiment goes awry in 1944, the target of a wizard's spell, the child of Satan, Hellboy, is wrenched from his home, and adopted by the U.S. agents who intercept his arrival. Raised as a force of good, Hellboy grows up to be a full-fledged demon in the form of a man, complete with fierce red skin, a tail, a giant rock-like hand, and two large circles where his horns should be (if they ever grow back, Hellboy is quick to break them off). Now, the adult Hellboy, an investigator of the paranormal, is sent on a mission that brings him back in touch with the evil genius that started it all... that Nazi wizard (and just who is *he* anyway?). Accompanying him along the way are other agents, including Liz, a pyrokinetic woman Hellboy has feelings for, and Abe Sapien, a mysterious amphibian hominid...
My Thoughts: This starts off kind of slow, but once it gets into the action and stuff it’s rather enjoyable. The story is original, a devil that is good and fights other monsters and the Nazis. I think seeing a big demon acting like a human is rather funny, which makes the movie that much better. The action in this movie is great, Hellboy gets his ass kicked at times, but it doesn’t bother him because he’s a devil. He is also fighting monsters way bigger than him or a large amount of them at once, which is exciting. Guillermo del Toro, the writer and director of Hellboy is working on a sequel to Hellboy, so if it greenlit I would love to see it.
It's Kinda like: Other movies based on comic books. It kinda reminded me of Blade because he is a good vampire that is protecting the world against other vampires.
My Rating: 4 out of 5

Anchorman
Worth it for:
Well personally I am in love with Will Ferrell
Plot: Set in 1970s San Diego, this is the story of local TV anchorman Ron Burgundy, God's gift to the ladies and the area's most respected reader of the teleprompter of the news fit to be known, who finds his position challenged by an ambitious female newscaster who, unlike Ron, actually knows something about journalism.
My Thoughts: This is a really funny movie that has a lot of clever people in it. Even the cameos in this movie are good like, Jack Black, Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson and Ben Stiller. I love any movie that has Will Ferrell in it and this movie is no different. He could make me laugh all day, but then I might get sick or something. Steve Carell (he used to be on The Daily Show) has one of the most humorous characters I have ever seen in any movie. Most people have probably already seen this movie, but if you haven’t and you enjoy laughter then you should see it and if you don’t see it then you’re a douche bag.
It's Kinda like: Other Will Ferrell movies especially because a lot of people who are in his other movies are also in this one.
My Rating: 4 out of 5

Napoleon Dynamite
Worth it for: This movie is just really funny.
Plot: Napoleon Dynamite is a quirky teenager growing up in the remotes of Idaho with a love for dancing and the way of the ninja who's really just trying to understand his life while living with his Uncle Rico, whose shady business deals are just some of the things that make Napoleon's social life in small-town Idaho all the more difficult.
My Thoughts: There really is no point to this movie, but it made me laugh a lot. Pretty much anything Napoleon said would make me laugh just the way he talked, same with many other characters in this film. Going into this movie nobody knew what it was about, coming out of this movie still nobody knew what it was about, but we did get a night of laughs out of it. If you want to laugh for an hour and a half then go see this movie, but if you want a movie with a plot I suggest you steer clear. Go see it gosh.
It's Kinda like: I can’t think of any movie that is like this.
My Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Starsky & Hutch
Worth it for: Seeing Will Ferrell has even though it’s not a big part.
Plot: Set in the 1970s in a metropolis called "Bay City," this is the tale of two police detective partners, Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson, and Dave Starsky, who always seem to get the toughest cases from their boss, Captain Dobey, rely on omniscient street informer Huggy Bear and race to the scene of the crimes in their souped-up 1974 Ford Torino hot rod, telling the story of their first big case (as a prequel to the TV show), which involved a former college campus drug dealer who went on to become a white collar criminal.
My Thoughts: This movie was quit good. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson work so well together because they have been in so many movies together; I think they are both comical. Plus the other people in the cast are great, too like Snoop Dogg, Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell and a few other people. This movie is a comedy first and everything else second which I think is good because I like comedies. This movie is good for a few laughs and you can never go wrong with Todd Phillips (Old School, Road Trip) as the director, you know it has to be good.
It's Kinda like: The old TV show, the Very Brady Movie because it’s a comic take on an old show, Old School because there is a lot of the same cast and same director, and other buddy cop comedies.
My Rating: 4 out of 5

Harold & Kumar go to White Castle
Worth it for:
The hilarious comedy.
Plot: Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle follows two likeable underdogs who set out on a Friday night quest to satisfy their craving for White Castle hamburgers and end up on a mind-altering road trip of epic proportions.
My Thoughts: I wasn't sure if this movie would be that cool, but once I saw it I decided it was really sweet. The movie was really funny and really pointless and I like pointless comedies. The two guys who played Harold and Kumar (John Cho & Kal Penn respectively) are hilarious and you may remember Cho from his small role in American Pie and Penn from his role in Van Wilder and Malibu's Most Wanted. The characters Harold and Kumar meet on the way to White Castle will stay in your mind forever. This movie also makes you hungry for White Castle. If you like movies like Dude Where's My Car this is a definite must see or if you like movies with stoners in them.
It's Kinda like: Dude Where's My Car but maybe because its made by the same person.
My Rating: 4 out of 5

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Worth it for:
Seeing how the trilogy ends, if you read the book you should already know, but it's still awesome.
Plot: The Fellowship's journey is coming to an end. Sauron's forces have attacked Gondor's capital of Minas Tirith in his final siege against mankind. Watched over by a fading steward, the once great kingdom has never been in more desperate need of its king. But will Aragorn find the strength to become what he was born to be and rise to meet his destiny? As Gandalf desperately tries to move the broken forces of Gondor to act, Théoden unites the warriors of Rohan to join in the fight. Even in their courage and passionate loyalty, the forces of men with Éowyn and Merry hidden among them are no match against the swarming legions of enemies raining down on the kingdom. With each victory comes great sacrifice. Despite their great losses, The Fellowship charges forward in the greatest battle of their lifetime, united in their singular goal to give Frodo a chance to complete his quest. Traveling across treacherous enemy lands, Frodo must rely increasingly on Sam and Gollum as The Ring continues to test his allegiance and, ultimately, his soul.
My Thoughts: Like the other 2 previous movies this one is awesome. They finally destroy the ring and there is a bunch of battles that take up most of the movie, but the battles are cool if you like that sort of thing. It would have been better if you saw more of Frodo, Sam and Gollum, but it works this way, too. The end of the movie wasn't great, but thats the way the book ends so I can't complain. If they had changed the end than it would just make me mad. The movie is pretty long, but it is so good that I don't even mind. I wanted to give this movie a 5 out a 5, but if a movie comes out better than this one I'm screwed.
It's Kinda like: Well it's like the first two movies and the book.
My Rating: 5 out of 5

DVD Reviews

Arrested Development: Season One - Three

The Show: Winner of the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy its first year out, Arrested Development is the kind of sitcom that gives you hope for television. A mockumentary-style exploration of the beleaguered Bluth family, it's one of those idiosyncratic shows that doesn't rely on a laugh track or a studio audience; it's shot more like a TV drama, albeit with an omniscient narrator (executive producer Ron Howard) overseeing the proceedings. Holding the Bluths together just barely is son Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), the only normal guy in a family that's chock full of nuts. Hardworking and sensible, Michael's certain he's going to be given control of his family's Enron-style corporation upon the retirement of his father (Jeffrey Tambor). The fact that he's passed over instead for his mother (Jessica Walter) is only a blip when compared to his father's immediate arrest for dubious accounting practices, and the resulting freeze on the family's previously limitless wealth.

The Extras:

The Extended Pilot

Commentary is available on some episodes

Deleted and extended scenes are offered for every episode

Several documentaries

My Rating: 3 out of 5

My Thoughts: This is one of the greatest comedies of the past several years. The writing is brilliant and the acting is even better. Every episode is pretty much brilliant with call back to previous episodes. There are some great guest stars including Henry Winkler, Scott Baio, and Carl Weathers. The way the show is shot is very original, kind of documentary style, but with hardly any references to the camera. I imagine some people were put off by Ron Howard’s narration that goes on throughout the show but I think it is great and adds a lot. I still don’t know why people didn’t watch this show, it was highly critically acclaimed and won several Emmy’s, and I am glad Fox stuck with it for three season even when the ratings were bad.

Saturday Night Live: The Best Of Will Ferrell

The Show:

My Rating: 4.4 out of 5

The latest in the line of Saturday Night Live's great character players (including Dan Aykroyd and Phil Hartman), Will Ferrell showcases his fearlessness in this 72-minute collection. Whether exposing skin or taking a pause beyond the normal limits, Ferrell induces hard laughs like with the cowbell rocker in the first sketch. The selection includes Ferrell's spot-on impressions of Cub announcer Harry Caray, game-show icon Alex Trebek, President Bush, and Inside the Actor's Studio host James Lipton. As with other SNL Best of... retrospectives, there are short snippets to go along with the full-length sketches that include excellent selections of Ferrell's returning characters Craig the Cheerleader and the swinging Culp brothers. A must for fans, and the DVD includes an intriguing audition footage in which Ferrell leaps from character and character.

My Thoughts: Saturday Night Live is on of the greatest shows on TV and throughout it’s history it has had some of the funniest people on the cast, including Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, David Spade, and many more. One of my favorite cast members has always been Will Ferrell. The Best ofs... are awesome because you get to see all of the great moments from your favorite cast member. The one thing that I would like to have seen on this DVD would be a commentary by Will Ferrell and Lorne Michaels.

Saturday Night Live: The Best Of Will Ferrell: Volume 2

The Show:

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5

There is no drop-off in laughs from the first to second volume of Will Ferrell's work on Saturday Night Live. Giggle along with his recurring characters, including James Lipton (interviewing Kate Hudson as a wonderfully ditzy Drew Barrymore), a wickedly clever George W. Bush, and one-half of the smarmy Lovers couple. This volume spotlights Ferrell's ability to go successfully over-the-top whether as an overbearing boss (check out how long he keeps stabbing a doomed coworker), a strict airplane pilot, an absent-minded doctor, or the world's oldest baby. There's plenty of unabashed (near) nudity and risky violence, which keeps the SNL tradition of "Not Ready for Prime Time"; check out what longtime hosts of the morning talk show resort to when the much-needed teleprompter fails. All that plus "Janet Reno's Dance Party" (with guest Rudy Giuliani) makes this the perfect pick-up for those who could not get enough of Ferrell with volume 1.

My Thoughts: Throughout it’s almost 30 years on TV SNL has seen many great comedians, the best of whom I would say is Will Ferrell. In his first years on the show people thought he was dumb and annoying, but by the time he was ready to move on to movies he was the highest paid cast member, ever. Will Ferrell is also the first cast member to have a Best Of... Volume 2. I believe Volume 2 contains some funnier sketches than Volume 1, but you should see both. As with Volume 1 I would like to have seen a commentary by Will Ferrell and Lorne Michaels on this DVD.

The Simpsons: The Complete Fifth Season

The Show:

My Rating: 5 out of 5

Sixteen seasons (and counting) of pop culture-rocking brilliance, the first four of which have already been gloriously archived on DVD. But in the words of Krusty the Clown: What has The Simpsons done for me lately? Well, how about all 22 episodes of season 5, each accompanied by commentary, deleted scenes, and other encyclopedic extras that hopelessly devoted Simpsons fans crave, no, demand? Season 5 is perhaps not as classics-packed as the third and fourth seasons, but no self-respecting Simpsons fan should be without the episodes "Homer's Barbershop Quartet," featuring George Harrison, "Cape Feare," one of Sideshow Bob's (and guest voice Kelsey Grammer's) finest half-hours, "Rosebud," "$pringfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)," and "Bart Gets Famous," with the Springfield-sweeping catchphrase "I didn't do it." Plus, the star power this season is impressive: Michelle Pfeiffer as Homer's comely, donut-loving co-worker in "The Last Temptation of Homer," Albert Brooks as a self-help guru who unleashes "Bart's Inner Child," Kathleen Turner as the creator of Malibu Stacy in "Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy," and, as themselves, the Ramones ("Rosebud"), James Woods ("Homer and Apu"), Buzz Aldren ("Deep Space Homer"), and even Robert Goulet ("Springfield").

But it is the writers and the core ensemble cast who exhibit, to quote "Deep Space Homer," "the right... What's that stuff?" Series milestones include the first appearance of yokel Cletus in "Bart Gets an Elephant," and Maggie's infant nemesis, The Baby with One Eyebrow in "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Badasssss Song," which also happens to be The Simpsons' 100th episode. Add in a very good "Treehouse of Horror" episode, (which outs Ned Flanders as the Devil and Marge as the head vampire), and one Emmy-nominated musical extravaganza ("Who Needs the Quick-E-Mart" from "Homer and Apu"), and you have a Simpsons season that's not just great, it's DVD-box-set great.

My Thoughts: The Simpsons is one of the best cartoons ever, not only that it is one of the best TV shows ever. The episodes for this season are great and the bonus content is even better. One thing I usually enjoy about DVDs is the commentaries and The Simpsons commentaries are great and they have commentary on every episode. If you have ever been a fan of The Simpsons, I would suggest you watch the DVDs because out of all the TV DVDs out there I would have to say The Simpsons are the best and in addition to the great DVDs the show is great as well.

Home Improvement: The Complete First Season

The Show:

My Rating: 4.8 out of 5
There's no more reliable engine for comedy than the differences between men and women; Home Improvement puts that topic front and center. Launched from the stand-up comedy of Tim Allen, this sturdy sitcom rests on the endearing, befuddled machismo of Tim Taylor (Allen), the host of a how-to-build-stuff show called Tool Time, who finds raising three sons and being a supportive husband isn't always as easy as sanding down a door frame. In the show's first season, the tried-and-true domestic plotlines are given a fresh spin by Home Improvement's embrace (and gentle mockery) of the men's movement that flourished in the early '90s. Tim's neighbor Wilson (Earl Hindman), whose face is always obscured by the fence between their yards, proves to be a font of Iron John-style wisdom--wisdom that Tim comically garbles when he puts it into practice. Allen and Patricia Richardson (as Tim's prickly but tolerant wife, Jill) immediately established a cozy but smart banter with enough bite to rise above the bland bickering of too many sitcoms. Some jokes degenerate into schtick--Tim's manly grunting becomes rote by the second episode--but Allen and his writing team consistently found surprises in this familiar territory. The capable supporting cast also includes Tim's sensitive and woefully single assistant Al (Richard Karn), his three cute sons (Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Zachery Ty Bryan, and Taran Noah Smith), and Tool Time's eye-candy (future Baywatch sex bomb Pamela Anderson).

  • Loose Screws - The Show's Most Hilarious Moments
  • Audio Commentary From The Show's Co-Creators And Executive Producers: Carmen Finestra & David McFadzean
  • Number of discs: 3
My Thoughts: As a kid Home Improvement was always one of my favorite shows. I loved to watch Tim blow things up and Al fix them, Tim screw something up at home and Wilson give him some advice. Everything about that show was great from the actors to the stories. All three of the kids are great and at one point Jonathan Taylor Thomas was my favorite person on the show. The first season has many classic episodes such as when Tim glued his head to a table and when he blows up the dishwasher while trying to give it “more power” and the Christmas episodes are unforgettable. If you like Everybody Loves Raymond you will probably like Home Improvement because for some reason they remind me of each other.

Chappelle's Show Season One Uncensored
The Show:
My Rating: 4.8 out of 5
In January, 2003, Comedy Central gave stand-up comic Dave Chappelle his own show. Aptly titled Chappelle's Show, it's made up of various sketches, wrap-arounds (Dave talking to the audience) and some music spots - most have been left off the DVD set though. Have you ever had a question for a black dude? What about a gay dude? What if there were a season of The Real World with black people and one white dude - what would happen?

The Episodes:
My Rating:
 4.3 out of 5
  • Episode 1 - Dave Chappelle plays America's most vicious blind white supremacist and unveils racy "bootie" videos starring Nat King Cole.
  • Episode 2 - Dave Chappelle plays a crack addict who visits an elementary school to give an anti-drug speech.
  • Episode 3 - Dave shows a girl who curses her breasts the error of her ways and shares hilarious outtakes from "Roots."
  • Episode 4 - Dave awards women with great "NY boobs" and predicts the chaos caused by reparations for slavery.
  • Episode 5 - Dave reflects on "Great Moments in Hookup History" and dares viewers to "Ask a Black Dude."
  • Episode 6 - Dave Imagines if "The Real World" did a season with an all-black cast and one super white guy.
  • Episode 7 - Dave takes a realistic look at "Pretty Woman" and "The Matrix" and introduces the Wu-Tang Clan's new financial consulting firm.
  • Episode 8 - Dave uncovers racism among Hollywood's animal stars, and Tyrone Biggums returns when his friends hold an intervention.
  • Episode 9 - Dave takes Japan by storm in the sci-fi adventure "Blackzilla" and stars in his own video game.
  • Episode 10 - Dave presents the History Channel's coverage of great inner city gang wars from the 1980s.
  • Episode 11 - Dave sees people's inner thoughts and freaks out when a little kid beats him at video games.
  • Episode 12 - Dave shows us what happens when couples try "Trading Spouses" and introduces a family-friendly brand of pot.
Extras:
My Rating: 3 out of 5
  • Commentary Tracks - Dave Chapelle and Neal Brennan (writer) provide commentary on a few of these episodes. They provide some funny tidbits about the show and some of the sketches, but there are some gaps in the commentary where they don't say a thing. Overall these are really entertaining. Commentary tracks can be found for episodes 1, 6, 9, 10 and 12.
  • Bloopers and Deleted Scenes (30:00) - Various bloopers and deleted scenes form the first season. You can watch it with, or without, commentary by David and Neal. You can also view the time remaining on the video, something you can't do with the episodes.
  • Ask a Black Dude with Paul Mooney (12:20) - Paul Mooney, "the black dude," answers more of the questions from folks that want to know more about black people.
  • Comedy Central Quickies (4:04) - Clips from two Comedy Central Shows: Crank Yankers - Wu Tang Bed & Breakfast and Reno 911! - "That's how we do it in Reno!"
  • Number of discs: 2

My Thoughts: I thought Chappelle's Show was hilarious since the first time I saw it. It's nice to finally get to watch the show with out all the bleeps and camercials. Some of my favorite skits would have to be the one with Clayton Bigsby, blind white supremacist who is black and anything with Tyrone Biggums. The five commentary tracks are good, I would have liked to have heard commentary on every episode, but they probably would have run out of things to say. The gag reel has some great bloopers on it.
